Anyone swap in a dana 60?

Just curious... I have been thinking if my 50 ever needed a serious repair I'd just source a 60 from the junkyard. I'm guessing it would bolt right in if I got one from a SRW truck, and I believe the DRW ones are largely the same only with spacers, at least if they are like the earlier ones. I don't know if the calipers and etc are the same, as most junkyards pull the calipers.

the superduty 60's don't seem to be as valuable as the old kingpin or even the 80's ball joint ones. I've seen them at junkyards for under $200 and seen them around here and there in the $300-$500 range.

And obviously the 60 is stronger and has more aftermarket upgrades.

Yep, I've thought about that too. If I decide to use my X for more of an expedition vehicle then I would definitely swap out for a 60. Much more aftermarket support for the 60, not to mention strength.

Have you priced any from Algers?

I don't even know what algers is. I'm starting to see early super duties in the pick a pull yards, and if my calipers and rotors will fit (and I think they will), then I can probably pick up the entire axle hub to hub for under $200. Its like $100 for an axle or something but then they charge you extra for the shafts, hubs, spindles, etc... depends on who is working.

Are you talking about Crazy Ray's? That's still a good deal. Alger's is a smaller yard back behind Ranson Elementary School. They can be spendy though, they pull the parts and that hardly ever yields a good deal.

I haven't heard of any failures on the 50.......so I doubt you will break it......the only difference is the axle shaft size.....slightly smaller

I think you need to spend a minute or two on google. They are a lot weaker than the 60, there are a million failures, and they have a lot more different parts than just the axle shafts, some of which was hinted at in my original post, had you read it, along with my reasons for considering an upgrade.

I reported this guy, I hope everyone else does too. We really don't need people like this in the excursion forum, who will answer a question with misinformation and then get defensive and insult people when they get called on it.

Exoptable has made this swap, let's get his 2c. IMO the D50 is plenty stout for what I do, but if ya wanna upgrade, go for it - don't forget the pics!

The D60 swap is strait forward when going from same drive line ( transmission, ESOF and SRW) F250 to Excursion. You should also use the shorter drive shaft that goes with the D60 axle on the donor pickup. There are 2 types of wheel studs (coarse and fine pitch) that should be matched with what you already have.
