Check out the transmission section a ways down on the site. If you have other gears, then there is an internal problem. I *think* second gear uses a band {intermediate? band} that grabs a drum. If the band broke, the strut fell out of place, the adjusting screw backed out or the servo leaks severely, the band may not apply. I think if you put the selector in the "2" position, you will be applying the gear directly. If it doesn't drive, you will likely have to disassemble for inspection.

Thats why transmission techs have job security. I would say your intermediate band (or whatever ford calls it) is probably at fault, could be just worn out and if your to that point you should just have the whole unit rebuilt. Take the unit to a reputable shop and it would save you on labor.
