I'm such a dumb a.. I went to pull the egr valve and in the process i saw the top hose from the degas bottle to the radiator was off. I took it off when I did my blue spring mod. about the same time this started happening. Easy fix but I feel so stupid.
At least you didn't drain the oil out of your 302...leave the drain pan down there (forgetting to reinstall the plug) dump 5 qts of new oil in...then start the car and wonder what the #$%^ that noise was after a few moments. It wasn't me, but I was standing right next to the guy and I didn't realize he forgot the plug either.
I'm glad it was something simple like that. EGR coolers aren't fun to replace.
