power steering pump... rebuild or replace?

My power steering pump on a '91 F-150 is leaking
pretty badly. I'm sure its the pump and not the
hoses. My question, would you try to rebuild this
or replace? Is there some sort of kit to replace
seals, etc.

Regards, Cliff

why rebuild it when you can get a reman pump with a warranty for probably less than $100? personally, doing a job twice because i missed somthing simple ticks me off. with a warranted pump, just yank it off and yell at the parts man
works for me

It all depends how much you want to spend vs. how much you hate to fix stuff....

Mine was leaking from the front seal so I decided to fix it myself. The kit was around $15 and included all new seals and o-rings. (CarQuest)

It isn't really that difficult if you take your time and have a shop manual that shows how to get it back together right. It will go back together wrong. I got it all together, reinstalled, started the truck and had ZERO power steering. Took it apart and figured I must have rotated one of the plates 180 deg. The key to sucess was that I pulled out the FORD service manual the second time.

The only tools you really need are a couple wrenches, a punch or nail, and a vice.

Well, this is the option: $13 for the rebuild kit vs.
$65 for a new (rebuilt?) part. I don't have access to
a shop manual at the moment... Haynes manual doesn't
have the info. Decisions, decisions...

I guess I'll take it off, take it apart, and decide
from there. Thanks for the help.

Getting that pulley off isn't always easy. You need a power steering pulley remover AND sometimes that doesn't help all that much.

I got a reman pump from autozone for less than $40 and they even pulled the pulley off the old pump and pressed it onto the new one. It's a little more whiny than the factory unit, but it works good and no leaks.

Whiney?! Mine is so loud it sound kinda like a supercharger, cool, but draws lotsa attention but is really annoying to me. This is the worst P/S pump on any Ford product I have ever owned! Why is it the Ford pumps are so loud? The other "Guys" don't sound like this. My wife can hear me coming a block away!

Personally I would rebuild. Done it twice and it worked great on both F150s. Give it a shot unless you hate the little details.
