fuel guage

05 f-250 5.4 auto 4x4, extended cab long bed. Tha fuel guage stopped working about 3 months ago, but hasn't affected the running of the truck, forgot to mention 177,000 miles. My question is ,Is it possible the float or whatever they use could have come off? As I understand the fuel pump and sending unit are all one part, any suggestions?

I don't know if my comment will help, but my F250 is diesel, and when my gauge quite working I put Lucas fuel treatment in the tank. My understanding is that it helped clean the contact on the float/sending unit. It cured my problem almost instantly. It might be worth a try to add some gas treatment to your tank.

Unlikely the float poped off... take the wire off the top of the tank. find which is the sending unit lead and ground it to the frame... if the guage peggs out to full you need a new sending unit, even if it is part of the fuel pump... If you dont wish to replace the whole thing, you can use your Odometer/ trip meter as a temporary fuel guage untill you wish to do the repair. If the guage does not pegg out, you have an open circut between there and the guage, or the guage itself

I would add some Chevron Techron Plus Fuel System Cleaner to an almost empty tank and then fill it up. You may have to do this a couple of time, but it may help on the first fill. It's worth a try before you tear into your tank.

add a couple of bigger bottles of fuel system cleaner.. it might help break the rust/scale off the float..

its kinda of a common problem..but its also possible the sending unit has died all together..

fuel treatment is a cheap fix if it works thou.

add the bottles then find a ruff road to bounce around on..
