I am getting diesel fuel in my crank case and I noticed that the area surrounding and including the mechanical lift pump are pretty much soaked. The truck had been sitting for a while before I bought it so I have been going through and making it road worthy, so I will probably replace the pump for peace of mind along with all of the o-rings for the injectors.
My questions is, after pulling the lift pump, is there a way of testing it?
Some guys reach down from top to do them, I always do them from underneath. I have found that I place the pump in the hole, then start the steel line fitting, then tighten everything up. Gives you more wiggle room to get the thread started.
it looks darn near impossible to even touch it from the top! mine was done from the bottom, i bolted it firmly to the engine first, then got to the lines. having the wiggle room might have helped a lot
A sharp scraper or putty knife works best, but be careful you don't gouge the cast iron of the block. Being a toolmaker, my scrapers are almost as sharp as my knives though, so it tends to take off old gaskets etc pretty good.
random question, is it possible to have a MAJOR oil leak from the lift pump?
my new to me truck leaks very bad, it appears to be leaking oil from around the base of the lift pump but is very hard to see.
the PO recently installed a new LP, i wouldnt be suprised if it is leaking due to his "hack job" approch to everything he touched...
that depends on how we define major, but yes, it can leak quite a bit. considering your view of the PO, lets say that the gasket was torn or folded as he installed it, or he forgot to tighten the bolts properly, then every bit of oil that splashes up there leaks out.
first thing i would do is clean that entire engine bay so you can really see where the leak is. from there, if the pump appears to leak, go buy a new one, pull off the old one, and inspect it. if there's something obvious like a torn/folded gasket, replace just the gasket, otherwise replace the whole pump
