Preventative Maintainence Question?

Besides the obvious of checking oil and coolant level - what are some things that should be checked weekly or monthly on the 6.4 to help avoid
major problems?

Draining fuel water separator monthly, checking coolant level in the fuel cooler monthy at least.

Just basically looking over all belts and hoses for any obvious signs of leaks.

Look at your radiator seams weekly as well.

Thanks for giving direct insight into what we should be doing. As a new diesel owner, I have reviewed numerous posts, printed some for easier reference, printed any articles or information that will help me understand what I now own and have signed up for several diesel truck magazines to increase my knowledge on diesel engines. I appreciate any advice on keeping my truck in top running form.

Senix went on break, I'll see if I can help. BTW welcome to the thread. Hang here and give the forum an hour or two a week and you will learn a lot. The water separater is under the drivers door on the inside of the frame. Not easy to get at but not too hard. Just go under the door head first and you will see it in the frame. It has a bright yellow handle. That opens the drain. Be careful it opens differently from how it looks. Pull it away from the filter, I think. While were talking about it the filter needs to be replaced every 10.000 miles. Do yourself a favor and service everything on the severe service schedule. So, if you can't find a record that the filter was replaced I would go ahead and put in a new one, that will get you on to a good schedule. Use only stock motor craft filters on the fuel system. Back to the drain, Open the valve and let a good sample drain into a clear jug or bottle. I use a pretzel jar. If you open the valve and nothing comes out make sure you are on a level spot, then try opening the fuel cap. If that don't get it draining use a very fine stiff piece of wire and try unpluging the drain. Once you get a sample look in it for "pockets" of water. If you get some then keep draining until you get only clear clean fuel. Scout around the forum and you will find some posts on fuel system failures, read them, they will encourage you to take very good care of the fuel system. Also you will find directions for changing the fuel filters, there are 2 of them. Trust me, this is very important.
