If it is a 65 with a 6 cylinder, and the carb is on the passenger side then it is either a 240 or a 300, it doesn't make a difference in most parts though because they only way to tell the difference is to know the stroke I believe. (Someone will pipe in if I am wrong). Everything about them is the same except that. I have a 240 in my 66, and when I replace it I will put a 300 in it's place.

What are you referring to?

Stroke: 240 = 3.18" / 300 = 3.98"

The 240 was standard equipment, the 300 was optional.

The 4th digit of the VIN is the engine code:

1965: J = 240 1V I-6 / B = 300 1V I-6.

But today, who knows if the engine is original to the truck?

This is why the stroke needs to be measured to verify.

What do you mean by "won't fit in the hole"? Is the oil pump drive not lining up or will the dizzy itself not fit the hole in the block?
