I used to run only the Shell 10W30 in my truck and a hodge podge of oils in all my motorcycles. Now I have switched to the Chevron Supreme 10W30 in my truck, and Shell Rotella 15W40 in all my motorcycles.
JimandMandy's post on the Delo 15W40 was very impressive.
So that begs the question......
Do I make it simple and switch to Delo 15W40 for EVERYTHING?
My truck is a 2000 model, 91,500 miles on a 4.2 V6.
As is now, I have seen no sign of anything "negative" to-date in the way oil consequences.
I do 5,000 mile drain intervals, use Motorcraft filters, live in central Alabama, and the truck burns no oil between changes.
I believe the factory recommended oil is 5W30.
So, think it through and give me your valued opinions, both good and bad.
Thanks a lot guys!!
I think Delo 400 is some great oil for diesels and gas motors designed for heavier oil, but I would be hesitant to run a 15w40 in a motor designed for 30 weght. My choice would be 10w30 Chevron Supreme except for bitter cold climates, then 5w30.
Great idea for ya Brian, run this change of Chevron Supreme thru the motor and when you change again, use the Supreme again and have that second oil analized. You may have next to no wear metals. The 4.2 has been turning in some extremely low numbers on Supreme.
Flash,
Thanks for the reply. I have already been planning to do just that. My next oil fill will put the drain interval right at 100,000 miles. This will be a mid summer run and I thought it would be interesting to compare the numbers to that from the Shell 10W30 fills from about 60,000 miles.
I'll do the test and post the numbers along with all those from previous Shell tests.
(Those numbers are already here, buried in a post from long ago).
Thanks again.
Hey Brian, I wouldn't worry about going to DELO if you really wanted to. I don't think the heavier oil would hurt anything except perhaps a miniscule bit of fuel economy that you might not ever notice anyway. I think the base stocks are essentially the same between the Supreme and DELO. The DELO just has a more advanced additive package. Good to have, but maybe overkill since you probably would have to really extend your drain intervals to realize a huge performance difference between that and the Supreme with a non-aspirated gasoline engine.
