I was thinking about switching from Castrol GTX 10w30 to Super Tech FULL synthetic 10w-30-How good is this stuff. How does it compare to castrol GTX?
How does the tech syn compare to Delo 15-40 in the summer?is it bad to switch to castrol GTX from delo during the winter and then back to delo because I can't find 10w-30 delo.
The truck this concerns is my 86 F150 EFI 302 ext cab lB that does NOT use any oil but seeps out a little but no leaks. In other words 5K changes and the oil level is still RIGHT on the full mark
If you are using Castrol and doing 5000 miles changes woith no consumption what are you trying to accomplish by switching?? Personally I would either use a good 10w30 (Chevron,Havoline,Motorcraft,Pennzoil,Castrol) or just use the Delo instead of using the Super Tech synthetic. It is most likely a group III synthetic at best anyway. If you really want to use a full synthetic just go buy the Mobil1 at Wally World. My .02 ...........
According to Flash, wear metals go up with syns in cold weather and cold starting conditions. Something to think about. I myself run Mystic, a little hard to get but its cheap and is disel rated, disel rated oils are far supeior to SL rated oils becasue they have more detergents and a better additive package.
For your earlier engine, IF you are not in a cold climate, I think Delo 15 40 is a great choice. I've run it in everything on my place that does not have roller lifters for about 20 years with fabulous success.
Why change if your 86 is running so well on what you have been feeding it. The only change I would make is trying Castrol high mileage oil to see if it lessens the slight seepage.
GTX will be API SM now or soon and will have a reduction in ZDDP. With a flat-tappet cam, a diesel-rated oil may be an advantage. Your profile states TX, so 15W-40 is fine all year (down to +4F). I'm trying 10W-30 Chevron Supreme in the '94 (roller cam) now, but no increase in fuel mileage over 15W-40 and it uses a little more.
