i just picked up a 79 f250 lariat, loaded with a 460 and it ran like crap on the way up to my home town when i checked things out i see the carb needs a rebuild and the vac advance unit for the dist was blown and the inside cam plate was seized in the dist resulting in not enough advance i was realy surprised when i went to order a vac advance from the local napa in town and paid about $62.00 for it! and a could have bought a rebuilt dist complete for about $85.00 same thing for rear drums $110 each for my f150 and we buy the drums for our kenworth tri-drives for $60.00 and theres 10 times the steel! some times you wonder why the part houses think every part is gold plated and have to charge the same
Supply and demand. Drums for your Kenworth are the same across the big truck industry. They're more common than dirt, so they're cheap. Drums for these old trucks are not common anymore, therefore harder to get. ...so the price goes up.
Last September I had to replace the dist. in my 351m. ('79 F150) It is the same as the 460 and it cost me $45 at autozone. It was a couple bucks more at O'Rielly but no where near where near $85. I knew there was a reason I don't go to Napa.
O'Rielly's and Vatozone are chains that specialize in chinese merchandise. Correct me if I'm wrong, but NAPA's are independently owned and operated by people that probably live in the community they serve. You generally get what you pay for, in one way or another.

I think you're right about the NAPA ownership, however, I've been pleasantly surprised how many products that I've bought for my truck that say "made in USA" on them. PCV valve, EGR valve, I think the trans modulator, and several other parts were.
i gusse you do get what you pay for and thats conveiniance usualy i have the parts the next day i forgot to mention i am in alberta canada and we pay through the nose for every thing up here as for rock auto i tried them a few times to no avail they have parts in 3 differnt ware houses in differnt locations in the usa and i could get the drums 1 place and the wheel cyl had to come from another and the brake hardware kit in another! to make things short i would of had 3 shipping charges accross border 200 shipping for 200 in parts i emailed them about having the parts shipped to 1 warehouse and shipping the complete order to me [as your shipping charges inside the usa are so much cheaper] for the canadian customers and was told to order the parts from the same warhouse but that dosnt work

Interesting. I have ordered from them before and have had shipments from various warehouses and I wasn't charged extra for this. One shipping fee was all I paid. You the consumer can't determine what warehouse this stuff will come from. As far as you know it is coming from Rock Auto so why would they charge you more?
Just to clarify. The dist was Ford part reman'd by A1 Cardone in America. Not the best dist. in the world I know, but it was in stock and got me running again same day. I realize these big chains sell a lot of crap but sometimes you gotta get running again.
I'm not to familiar with Canada, are you in a remote area? Just wondering why they feel they can gouge you like that.
