could that sensor being bad also make my truck high idle in cold weather even after truck has came to operating temps... cause sometimes in cold weather i will sit and let it run a while after driving a good distance on the interstate or washing the truck in the cold with it running and it will start to high idle like its dead cold but i kinda like that lol
Ok guys thanks for the pointers I'll try changing the oil temp sensor and see what happens. And i also thought that after the truck came to operating temp it was supposed to high idle anymore ?? We need to find the answer to this im goin nuts

No, it will continue to idle high if the outside temp is cold enough, to keep the engine at operating temps. Mine does it, and every 7.3 we have at work does it, it is completely normal.
yes i understand that it is supposed to high idle from when u first start it cold in the morning untill you tap the brake or clutch or accelerator or start to move but the question im asking is should it normally do this like for instance i take the truck from my house to the gas station get it up to normal ranger operating temps and drive home and leave the truck idling in the driveway completely warmed up should it still start to high idle again after a couple mins?? my buddies 03 does not do it
Mine has done that numerous times when I thought it was warmed up. How do you know its totally warmed up? Do you have AE hooked up and watching it? I thought it was completely normal. I know it takes forever and a day for our trucks to warm up. Whats the temp outside when it does it? Does it do it after a long drive?
It is normal. It will idle up to maintain engine temp. Also, something to do with cylinder wash down. Diesel engines are very inefficient at idle, and cool down to much for complete combustion. So, they idle up during cold temps to keep engine warm and maintain a more complete combustion process. This is what I have read on this very sight, on multiple threads started on this very topic. IT IS NORMAL.
Alright man not doubting anybody's word just making sure im clear what else would the truck do as proof its a bad sensor? This weird idling is really annoying its just weird truck never loses power just slightly bad idle and little surge ... why
ok here is an update on this. i changed the engine oil temp sensor today and replace HPOP reservior with new clean oil still idles exactly the same kinda rough and a pulsing idle.. makes no sense cause truck still has same power and starts easy warm or cold just idles like S**T i cant understand it. this crap only happened after installing the t 500.. any way i checked some parameters with ae and this is what i have got at idle maybe someone can help me make heads or tales of it.. ICP varies from 550-560 give or take a little ICP duty cycle is at 11.72-12.11 give or take a lil and ICP volts is 0.89-0.93 is my sensor good or bad or do i need more info
Have you figured anything else out? I don't know if I mentioned before, but I have replaced ICP, ICP pigtail, IPR, EBP, MAT, APP, and about 5 CPS sensors chasing this gremlin. Truck has not stalled since repairing my half-a$$ed job on the ICP pigtail, but idle is still not right.
I tried a while back to get someone with AE and a good idling truck to post a plot of what ICP looked like at idle. No one did. You can see mine climb and fall almost like a stretched out square wave. Will try all the AE stuff PaysonPSD mentioned this evening.
no i havent figured anything out yet its still driving me crazy have u by any chance got a t500 hpop cause mine seemed to start this stuff after the new pump install idk what else to check ae shows me nothing the tests come back clean and no codes does anybody in east tennessee know how to use ae well enough to come show me what i need to be looking for to fix this grimlin before i start to pull my hair out

Stock HPOP on mine. Last runs (over 2 years ago) showed healthy HPOP. Maybe I should hook the gauge up again.
