I recently purchased a 1995 F250 4x4 with the 7.3 diesel and auto transmission. Occasionally when slowing to a stop it felt like the trans did not want to "let go" and the truck would try to lurch against the brakes. It would continue until I put it in neutral. When I would then put it back in drive to proceed forward the trans would "grab" and the truck would again lurch forward. The engine seems to run perfect and it shifts normally up through the gears and downshifts when it should. The tach shows that it is idleing at about 600-650. when i start the truck and put it in drive the engine stalls when it is cold. When i put it in drive when the engine is warm the trans "grabs" but the engine is able to lug and it does not stall. Thank You for your help!
Is this something that the dealer would be able to diagnose by plugging the truck into the computer? From reading other posts it appears that they are quick to say replace the trans. I really don't like that option. Thank you again.
Well I took it to the dealer to check it out and got the reply that I expected from reading other posts. Internal trans failure!!! I asked the service person if they dropped the pan and they said yes. I asked if they put new fluid in and they said, no, it's not worth it. $3000 plus for new trans. I stopped at my auto parts store and got 16 quarts of fluid and 2 quarts of Lucas trans additive and a new pan gasket and filter. Once home I found that they had not dropped the pan at all. I changed the fluid and filter, added the Lucas, and after a small amount of driving the problem appears to be gone. Go figure!!!
yo,
There is supposed to be a "reuseable" pan gasket in these years. Our local dealer changed gaskets anyway during 1st flush and fill @ 25k miles (did it early due to off-roading and sand runs at the beaches).
You may want to do the flush again soon, including the torque converter (look for a drain plug on it, after removing the shield); rotate engine till you see it.
I actually changed it twice, about a week apart, but thought my narrative was getting tooo long for the full story. I drained the converter both times and also used a little compressed air to blow out the cooler lines after disconnecting both ends from the trans. I had read in another post that if the fluid gets gunky, then you change it, you are then loosening up some gook and thereby contaminating the new fluid, so you should do it twice. Made sense to me! Anyway, so far no problem. Thanks for the info AIM !
