Help?

Im getting an intermittent stumble with a check engine light. I have a 1990 Ranger XLT with a 2.3L 5spd. I pulled the codes 32 41 88. I looked them up but Im not sure what to check next. Any advice would be helpful. I have done much searching on several sites but havent found much. OBD-1 eludes me.

32(R)EVP - EGR not responding properly during test - EVP

41System Indicates Lean

88 Loss Of Dual Plug Input Control c What does it all mean??? What would you check next?

111 reads & no replys, so I'll see if I can get things stated.

I have a different read on the P032 code= EGR not controlling, not seated. Might be carboned up if its using oil, or with the vintage, maybe rusted, or a leaking diaphragm, so the EGR valve itself & its vacuum control diaphragm & vacuum line needs to be looked at & tested.

P041= O2 sensor no switching detected, or indicating lean. Maybe a dead or lazy O2 sensor, so if it has 75K miles or more, it belongs on your suspect list. Or maybe an intake vacuum leak if the O2 sensor checks out.

P088= I don't have a description on for your engine, but assuming your defination is correct, the computer is unhappy with input to the coil pack. So a wiring & electrical connector pin/socket inspection is in order & maybe a back probe voltage test, if the wiring & connector check out ok.

Some thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find.

Thanks much for the reply, now I have some direction on what to check. I will start looking it over in the next few days and post my findings. This 2.3L is the 8 plug motor and uses no oil. Truck has 195k miles on it not sure about the engine it seems much newer. I say that because the oil doesnt change color at all between changes, it stays very clean.

The comment about your 2.3L with 195K miles on it not changing oil color between changes, causes me to want to ask if your using a non detergent motor oil?????

Its common for a detergent motor oil color to quickly turn dark as its detergents/dispersants clean the engine & hold soot paricles in suspension. If your not seeing that action, then all of those soot particles are remaining in the engine to settle out & cause sludge buildup mischief!!!!

Castrol 10w40 conventional oil its what I have used for as long as I can remember in everything I have run. Only other vehicle I had do this was a Geo Prism of my dads but it was running Mobil 1 Synthetic.

Yesterday I installed a new O2 sensor and a PCV valve. I also discovered my truck has california emissions. I cleared the codes and I guess I will see if they come back.

Whats your reasoning for using 10W-40 in NC, as its Way heavy for that high rev ohc engine, that needs & appreciates lube to the top end camshaft pronto, especially on cold starts. That engine & many others have been back specified by Ford for 10 years now to run 5W-20.
The 40 weight will also stay in the top end longer, to be whipped into a froth by the camshaft & not drain back to the oil pan sump as quickly as a 5W-30, or 5W-20, so sump capacity is affected & that can matter if your in the hilly part of NC, or off road.

Some 10W-40 thoughts for pondering.

Will be interesting to hear how things go with the new O2 sensor & PCV valve, so keep us posted.

So far no CEL. Its been about 80 miles so I think it was the problem. The 10W40 oil? Im originally from PA...whatever that has to do with it. I dont know really why, I guess its just what I always ran in my vehicles. I will admit they have always been older V8s up til now.
