Robin, I think you may do more harm than you think, I believe the impact wrench will over torque the crank bolt and damage the threads or berak the bolt.
The spec for the damper bolt is 212 lb/ft of torque. The engine starts turning long before you can get it that tight. Don't think that bolt would get damaged unless you tried this on a seized engine.
i have a motor on a stand right now, when i get it rebuild this week i will try the breaker bar and see what it dose. then again in the truck with the starter to compare.

Matt,
While it's on the stand can you throw in a try wth a 1/2" impact wrench?
i dont have an impact.
dont like them.
i know a guy that lost an eye to one when the socket busted.
and the ones i have used broke more bolts then they got out.
Compression tests are supposed to be done with all the spark plugs/glow plugs removed. But that one cylinder you are testing is gonna make the motor hard to turn over by hand and get a accurate reading.

update
i did a compression test today on the motor on the stand with a breaker bar.
i turned it with all 210lbs i had all i could get was 30psi. i just cant turn it fast enough to not get leak down.
so a test on the stand with a breaker bar wont tell you much.

I'm betting a good impac will just shear the bolt off then.
