steering problems

I just bought a 77 f-150 4x4 and am trying to fix the steering. The truck will pull to one side or the other, back and forth as I drive down the road, like the front end can't figure out what way to go when I am going straight. The ball joints are tight, I replaced the y steering setup with a 79 version, used, but worked fine on the truck I took it off of. Tie rods are good, steering shaft is good as well as the rubber joint in it, that is new. It feels like the steering is surging side to side. Any ideas on what is wrong with this thing, trying to get it road ready, thanks,
Bill

I had this problem with a my F250 a few years ago. I replaced every part on the thing except the pum and it still did it. After replacing the pump it has worked fine ever since.

well i replaced all my inner and outer tie rods..rebuilt power steering pump...it was still not good and hard to keep straight but i run 50 series tires in the back..i also replaced my steering box with a new one that helped alot..but i finally realized these are older trucks and they just not going to handle like a new one or straight..that is my opinion..

silly question, but did you have the front end aligned?

The 4x4 only has one adjustment I think. It's the one to keep the tires pointing the same direction. I don't know if the shims on the hub effect steering or not, but that might be worth looking into.

I have a simular problem, but I figured that running 14.5" wide tires was the problem.

I replaced the wheel bearings. Seems that if the truck sat for a few days it would pull one way or another. Ended up being the wheel bearings. Also put in new lockers right away seeing I had it apart.
