Cummins Conversion Question

I have a junk Econoline bus with a good non intercooled Cummins 12 valve in it.
My question is: Are both the C6 and E4OD bell housings used behind the Navistar/Internationals the same as the 460(7.5)?
If so, I could do a straight bolt in conversion with my Super Duty mason dump.
I'm getting ready to junk the bus and I need to make a decision weather or not to sell the conversion kit or keep it. The 5.9 motor, I'm definitely keeping. It'll fit my Case crawler if it won't go in the dump truck.

I dont believe so. I know the zf5 bell housings are different for diesel than gassers, id assume that the e4od is different too...

What I mean is the bolt circle. They probably all use the big block pattern with the adapter plate right?

No, the diesel is slightly different. You can rework the holes a bit if you feel so inclined. However, you can find adapter plates to do the same thing, check out destroked.com.

Don't the diesels use an adapter plate to begin with?

They do, as the adapter actually bolts on the back of the block, which retains the main seal. For what ever the reason, the diesels use a unique bell instead of re-using the common bell pattern of the 460 and 351M-400.

The diesel motor already as a plate which allows the motor to be used in multiple configurations, Ford light duty trucks being just one. Instead of having to accommodate one certain bell housing, they can simply switch the adapter plate and mount to a different configuration. The Cummins motor is the same way.

Is it an SAE bellhousing?
That would mean I could bolt a Catsubishi in it if I wanted to?

No, it is Ford specific, but SAE bells can be had for both motors.

Thanks man.

Looks like I'll be selling a big block E-350 to Cummins kit soon. I'll be sure to save that custom doghouse then!

Now, keep in mind that you will have to find the right SAE number bell, and one that is specific to the Cummins motor. Unfortunately, the mounting to the motor is not the same. Since the adapter holds the rear main seal on most diesel motors, you have to accomodate that. I know our IH tractors have the same kind of setup.

Yeah, I was just thinking, if my 7.3 ever gave up...but it doesn't even have 75000 mi on it yet and it runs like a top.
I figured, if the big block parts were the same as the 7.3 parts, I could bolt the 5.9 right in but I guess that wouldn't work, my truck being a 7.3 and not a 7.5 gas like the bus I have.
The conversion kit has nice motor mounts, adapter plate, linkage, wiring A/C brackets, heater and radiator hoses, dog house (engine cover) and intake and air cleaner. All for a 460/C6 E350 of course. It might have some kind of adapter on the back of the crank or for the flex plate also. I don't know.

I also have a sub 30,000 mi Hino 6.0 and AT545 if I wanted to do that much work. But my truck is really fine like it is.

I think I'll maybe sell the whole thing, 5.9 engine and all. My C6 is no good but for a core.

I am planning to scrap the bus as soon as everyone clears off for vacation in a couple weeks. I'll have the farm to myself. Hopefully the pay out stays like it is (12 cents/pound) or goes up.

I doubt you will have that hard a time getting it moved. Changing out a stroke to put in a mechanical Cummins brings some other headaches as well, since the Stroke has no throttle linkage...

I would expect that for the most part the Cummins mounts will work on F series as well, but could be wrong about that for sure. I personally don't generally see the point in swapping one diesel for another unless there is an issue with said motor. Then the decision has to be made as to whether converting makes sense.
