86 bronco 5.0l EFI, stalls and only runs about 25-30mph. A mechanic told me that it was the high pressure pump, it only has 15 lbs pressure. Fuel pump in tank was replaced about 3 years ago and fuel pressure regulator about 10 years ago. I'm not convinced this is the problem. After 5-10 mins of idle it will cutoff, if your driving it, it may run fine for 30 or so miles or may not go 5 miles it then begins to run rough and only goes about 25-30 mph. Mechanic also told me the high pressure pump was $380 when NAPA parts told me $93. Fuel filter was just replaced, pick up on dist was replaced 3-4 years ago.
I think the mechanic tried a new module, did not correct the problem
So you took your truck to the mechanic, he told you what was wrong and you don't believe him? Seems to me he is on to something so I'm not sure why you don't believe him. The $380 was likely parts and labor, right?
Your '86 has TWO fuel pumps so the replacement of the low pressure unit in the tank has nothing to do with the high pressure unit on the frame rail under the driver's seat. Furthermore, if the mechanic took a pressure reading at the fuel rail and got 15 PSI, then he was dead right. The minimum pressure for the EFI system is 35 PSI which is more than TWICE what your mechanic said the pressure was at the time of the test.
Thanks. The mechanic is not my ordinary mechanic. When the bronco stalled it was less than 100 yards from this place of business. Well I wouldn't normally question it, but the first thing he did was put a new module on it, no fix, then he put a battery in it,said it was weak, no fix, then he replaced the ground wire, no fix then he told me it was the high pressure pump on the chassis and the cheapest he could find a pump was $380 at Carquest. I called NAPA, the pump was $93. Labor would not cost $300, even a con artist wouldn't try that, so I asked again today, is that the price for the pump or pump and labor, The Pump!!!!! I said shut hood push it to the side let me know what I owe you now and I'll have someone to pick it up today. It may be the pump, but he want put it on. I put a new gas tank and an in tank fuel pump on it 3-4 years ago and everything was less than $500.
