390 hp question

Im picking up a 64 f250 4x4 this weekend and the guy said that his grandfather had the short block built before he passed away. He also told me that he put the topend together with an edelbrock manifold, carb and a comp cam, not sure on cam specs but it pulls decent vacuum and has a nice lumpy idle, not to radical. He said he would guess the motor to be around 400hp but I'm thinking more like 325hp 400tq. My question is with a cam, manifold, carb, fresh rebuild, what are some accurate numbers? Also what would it take to hit the 400hp mark? I'll provide more details when I get the truck home.

Hard to say without the specifics and knowing the compression ratio.

Headers?

400hp?

This is a bit different than what you have, as these are stroker motors with head work etc, but you can see what it takes to get to 500 hp, so figure enough cam, carb and headers on top of 9--9.5 compression and a valve train that will run up to 5500 rpm.

I'd say the compression is around a realistic 9:1 and I belive it has Sanderson headers. It runs great and sounds good dispite the stock looking quiet mufflers, I can see this thing sounding pretty nasty with some flows or glass packs. It also has a full Jacobs electronic ignition and points eliminator. I'm going to pick it up Saturday so ill give the guy a call and see if I can get some info about the cam and if any head work was done. All I know is that I deff need to do some brake upgrades, atleast a dual master cylinder lol.

Thread title is "390 HP question".

Remains to be seen if it's a real 390, but OP will figure that one out.

I'm pretty confident its a late 60s early 70s 390, it was swapped out after the 292 took a dump. Then it got tired and rebuilt.
