I’m looking to purchase a Ford 460 motor from a friend of mine. It originally came from a 1997 F250/F350 4x4 truck. I want to put it into my 1977.5 F250 4x4. He had already swapped it into a 1986 F350 at one time, so I know it fit that truck. It is set up for carburation and went (and still is) going behind a C6.
Any issues with compatibility of years other than the standard swap of motor mounts and exhaust components?
You didn't specify what was originaly in the truck. in 77 the F250 came factory I beleieve only in the 2WD models ( please correct me if I am wrong ) but you need to mount motor mounts, I am assuming you got a complete motor so you won't have to worry about pullys or anything. The main thing is cooling make sure your radiator is big enough. 460's love lots of cooling. Good luck with your transplant you should have one mean dent when your done.

Oh yeah...my bad.
It has/had a 351m, so I know the 460 is a good candidate in that case as there were similarities in the bolt up of the two motors. I know you need to use different motor mounts and so forth. I guess I was just looking for confirmation that the block wasn’t entirely different come 1997 from the late 70's early 80's 460's that many people go with in these trucks.
It will come complete with all accessories including A/C components which I will remove (non A/C cab). Small things like requiring a flex plate or flywheel I’m not concerned about but since its going to a C6 again, shouldn't be much issue.
Someone else (77&79F250) mentioned something about clearance for the exhaust manifold on the passenger side frame rail....
one thing I am having issues with is the plate inbetween the block and trans if you don't have one or if it's distorted the starter does not engage right. I am sure the one you have is in good shape just a little side note

Don't be like the P.O. of my truck, who thought the proper way to do that was to just take an oxy-acetylene torch an just melt a 1"x3" hole in the top of the frame to make it all clear - get the right headers and do it right!
If this 460 came in the truck and is still in the frame take a look at the passenger side exhaust manifold. You will be able to clearly see if there is a issue. Truck manifolds tuck the outlet out the back with clearance to the frame.
Whats up with this truck anyway? Is he parting it out? If so get all you need to do the swap. That includes the radiator, linkages, exhaust and what ever else he is willing to part with.
Sorry after re-reading I guess the engine is out and waiting. Still it probably has manifolds that clear. I'll see if I can snap a pic....

The motor still is in the truck (the 86 F350), all hooked up. I'm not close enough to just run by and take a look....
If this clearance issue is just a matter of having the correct exhaust manifold on it, then I am sure it is ok. This guy is a proffesional in every sense of the word. There is no way he would not have half assed the install into the 86 truck.
when you go over to look at the 460 bring a tape measure, a friend mentioned something about the 460 being longer which meant you 'may' need a shorter water pump, or a shorter or no spacer, depending on the fan you are using, some used a taller, but thinner radiator, either way the mods are minor, just check to see how much longer the 460 is vs. your 351M
note: check w/ Infoford on oldfordcrewcabs...ncspecialities, he installed a newer 460 in his crew cab build, I had forgotten about him earlier, he may also have access to or have the necessary items for your install, but he at least can give you some firsthand insight..
Yea piratius the PO of ol blue did just that (frame torch trick) and installed 3" FRONT BLOCKS after the oil pan was hit by the front pumpkin due to using worn out "High Boy"
6 pack front springs and then he double stacked the rear blocks........
STUPID..... yes he is, also I beat him down on the price unmercifully with some FTE knowledge. With every "I think its....." I said nope, wrong, and took more off his asking price.
The frame notch and reason for it was a "well I didn't know there was a difference". And this and that and bla bla bla. I was peeling 100's off the stack and putting them in my "keep pile" as we talked.
L&L has a 460 install kit and have heard mixed FTE reviews on there mounts. I think you have to adj the "towers" if you use the old 351M ones?
bdawg is your friends 86 F350 a 4x4, 2wd I believe will have a front sump pan? And you need a rear sump and if you have to swap it you will need a rear sump pan oil pick up tube also.
Another issue on ol blue, it still has a front sump pan and front timing cover dip stick......
Yes to the 4x4. The original 1997 truck was a 4x4 that it came out of and he put it into the 86 truck which was also 4x4. I'm 4x4 as well as you know. I remember seeing the sump to the back when I originally looked at it.
I also recall him talking about all the electronics that origianllly ran it when it was in the 97 truck. He did away with all that on the swap into the 86. Also mentioned it going to a carburated setup at that time as well, so I guess it was not origanlly???
Someone put me onto these mounts by JBG which look extremely up to par with my build and will be the route that I go.
Thanks for the tip on measuring the block. Next time I'm out that way I will check it.
I guess at this point I don't need to waste anymore of your time unless someone thinks the have something important to share. We're all just going to be guessing beyond the limited info I told you. I will just wait till I can get it, bring it home, and see what I got. I think I should be good though.
I am just saying here (FTE) is the best since I referenced them first, but you have to get smart in more than one school house. Just pay homage to the alamata lol.
