A bronco site's detailed history explained that through '85 both a standard and a high output version of the 351 were offered. And that in '86 the std was deleted so that all 351's were the H.O. version. I called a couple Ford parts dept.'s and they were unable to verify this and know what the vin code is. I want to as I plan to buy an '86 and would like to make sure to get the H.O. Also would like to know what/if any differences there were other than the 4 barrel in the H.O.
From what I can understand from our local Ford dealer the 351 H.O. engine was designed for use in heavy vans and trucks. The engine has a high torque low RPM cam with extra duty valve springs. They say 4800 RPM was maximum recommended red line.
It shows a separate 351W and 351W H.O. up to and including 1986, which I believe is correct. 1987 is when Ford went to E.F.I. on this engine, and no H.O. is listed from then on, but the HP is the same.
I think that the MotorCraft(Holley) 4bbl., heavy-duty valve springs and a different cam made the H.O. what it is.
My engine code is "H", right after the "U15", and it's an H.O. The regular 351W with a 2bbl. is code "W"
