My grandpa's '65 has a hydraulically actuated brake controller in it that quit working recently. It is teed in right after the M/C. He wants to replace it with another hydraulically actuated one. I can't seem to be able to find one for him. I have tried to talk him into an electronic one but for some reason wants his old style.

Were can we get one?
Haven't seen one of those in years...that is not to say they are not around... Pretty much all of new trailer brakes are electric, or they are the surge brakes that self actuate off of the ball hitch... you might get lucky on Craigslist, or Fleabay with a good used one... Good luck on that...Old Guys get set in their ways, and it is really hard to show them the newer better technology...
A lot of folks seem to think that a hydraulic brake controller means you would have some kind of hydraulic (brake) line to the trailer, but only the controller in the cab is activated hydraulically.
That hydraulic signal is converted to an varying electrical signal that is sent to the electrical trailer brakes that mimics the vehicle brake application.

Were still talking electrical brakes here.
Not sure why anyone thinks that, but perhaps it has to do with a great many folks starting their towing careers long after the old "teed-to-the-master-cylinder" models were long gone, although I could make a case in favor the current accelerometer model electronic controllers.

Correct. I am talking about how the controller is actuated.

I know. Us old guys used to use em, but a lot of these here kids have probably never even seen one. Not sure things get better over time, but they sure keep changing.
Now we have electric over hydraulic so the brakes are hydraulic on the trailer, but all the actuating is done electronically. Who would have ever thunk it?
I don't recall seeing anyone in this post that was confused about how they work.. common sense would dictate that you would not run a hydraulic line to a trailer.... That was the reason that Air brakes were invented for rigs, as Hydraulics were not feasible for rigs.

I also did not see it in a post and assumed it perhaps arose out of conversation, etc.
Is there anything cheaper out there? Grandpa doesn't want to spend $350 but still wants the hydraulic actuated controller. I still can't convince him to go with a cheaper electric one. I think I know where I get my stubbornness from.

Nothing I know of except used and I still think used is a mistake when it comes to anything having to do with safety where you might be buying blindly.
Can you clarify point of concern regarding electronic controllers? They are fast and easy to install, darn near bulletproof, and action is seamless.

My opinion
I have tried to explain this to him a couple of times. I have a couple electric ones in other vehicles. When I ask him why he wants a hydraulic one, he says "I don't know". When he sets his mind on something, it can't be changed.
