Well, I bought a new project, she's got a few issues. The truck is a 97 F250 7.3 5spd with 350K. I've been associated with the truck on and off over the past three years, because it was a truck at a ranch I do some weekend work at, so I know a bit of its history. Its been well abused, but has had good maintenance most of its life, minus it getting overheated 5 years ago and having to have the heads replaced.
I've paid $800 for the truck, so I couldn't pass it up. It orginaly wouldn't start if it was below 50 outside, GPR fixed that up. But now it cranks fine, idles fine, but has zero power when driving. It doesn't really smoke (a light grey haize, but it also burns a tad bit of oil). When idling if you floor the throttle, it will make a puff of black smoke, and has trouble climbing to 3K rpm, (It builds to 2400 bogs down a couple of seconds then will snap to 3K). The turbo appears to be spooling fine, (visual check while running), and if you put your hand on it, it sucks hard. It sounds a feels like driving an IDI, and maxes out at about 55-60 MPH.
I've changed the oil, and fuel filter and refilled the fuel bowl and tank with Silver Diesel Kleen, but it really didn't help.
The only other symptom is it occasionaly dies, I was attributing that to the CPS though. It doesn't throw a CEL either.
If it doesn't go smooth right up to 3k, with no load then that is indicative of a worn out HPOP. Have you ran a test for injection control pressure (hpop pressure)?
The general rule of thumb is that sitting in the driveway, you can floor it and if your truck doesn't go right to 3k rpm injectors/hpop are tired.
I am assuming that this is not a cold climate? If it is then your EBPV may be operating how it should until the truck warms up.
I just bought an AE and was hesitant with that much coin. Well worth the money. Someone I think here was selling the exact AE you need for powerstroke for $250.
It was a balmy 65 degrees today, so that rules out out the EBPV, (I never heard it engage, and my 99 didn't engage this morning either)
I guess I'll scrounge up an HPOP. I know the OBS uses the 15 degree pump, but what would happen if I put a 17 degree pump on it without any other mods.
I'm trying to get out of this truck as cheap as possible, and I've still got the entire front end to rebuild coming out of my budget?
For the front end I would recommend XRF Chassis. I personally haven't run them, but have heard great things about them. 1million mile warranty, although they are made in Taiwan under strict quality control.
Most likely I'm just going to flip it and sell it, I may end up getting attached and keeping it, but being is I already have one single cab, but with less miles and 4x4, I doubt it.
