I have an 86 f-150 302 EFI. I've replaced egr valve, distrib, cap, button, plugs & wires, coil, both fuel pumps, fuel regulator, battery and took the cats off.
the truck will run fine when sitting in yard idling but when you start to drive the truck wants to start cutting back and wont drive and then cuts off but it will crank back up.please if anyone has any ideas please let me know ive done got $1800 in this truck and still dont have it running right. and the timing is good on it.
Timing advance is also controlled by the computer, the only thing one can really do is set the initial in the general area it needs to be (usually something around 10° BTDC) and the computer handles it from there.
My car behaves similarly when the computer puts it into limp-home mode, it won't let me go more than 30 MPH.
Why are you replacing all these parts? Did the problem come as a result of replacing all this stuff, or is this stuff an attempt at fixing the problem?
Someone with a 86 needs to help out, or look in the book, but a "foam filter" doesn't sound like it's all the filters it has. It might have another one in the line somewhere. These early efi trucks were a little weird with the fuel system, with 3 pumps and such.
well the truck wasnt running at all and i had someone look at it and they give me a list a stuff to replace and so i did, then i was able to get the truck running but it just wont drive now. And on the fuel filter the round black canister with the foam inside is the only one ive went from the fuel tank to the motor and thats all that is on it
Franklin reminded me, some of these things have 3 fuel pumps - one in each tank, and one hi-pressure pump up kinda near the engine. Have you checked output pressure & flow rate at the engine?
Given that you were given a list of parts to replace, how do you know the timing is set correctly?
With teo tanks, two fuel filters on that truck originally, one on the frame rail under the drivers side footwell near the hi pressure pump, a metal quick connect style. And the one in the tank switching valve that you replaced, that one should be paper, not foam.
Its only got one tank so i only had two pumps. But the pressure on the fuel rail at motor is holding at around 45 psi. and on the timing the guy that told me everything to get was the one that set it for me bc i didnt have a light to set it right with.
i just went and checked again to be sure and that was the only filter. but i went and told the part house told them what i needed and the give me the foam so when i got back and took the black canister loose that was what kind was already on it. so im not sure if this was replaced to an incorrect part before me or what but im the second owner of the truck my uncle got it new in 86 and i got it from him in 04 bc it stopped running i replaced the timing chain and gear and didnt have any problems with it till now but it has been parked for 3 years bc i had a new truck and didnt drive this one anymore
