93 F250 - rust in all of the pipes, new problem, spewing rusty water and coolant from overflow tank and radiator cap, overheating quickly, replaced some hoses, replaced thermostat, still doing the same. Oily water coming from exhaust. Heater has stopped working, it's just blowing cold air. I'm thinking it must be a blown head gasket. Anyone have a similar problem? How hard is it to replace this yourself?
If there is rust in the system, it could likely clog both the heater(which is why it won't make heat) and the radiator(which is why it is overheating).
Oily water from exhaust, likely blown head gasket. If it's purging up from radiator cap, then also likely head gasket is blown allowing combustion pressure to escape.
Yes, you can do head gaskets at home if you have some basic hand tools and the knowledge.
While it's apart, time to flush the heater to see if you can make it work properly. Might just be the fact it's low on water, but better to flush it since you know there is rusty water in the system. Using a garden hose, flush it back and forth through both hoses til it comes out clean and free running.
The radiator might take more effort, even if you take it to radiator shop and have it cleaned/tested. Better to fix problem now then put if back together and have it overheat again.
Thank you so much for responding! I was also curious if it was maybe the water pump, but with SO MUCH rust (it's BAD)...you are probably right on about the clogs...really hoping you aren't right on about the head gasket however ...
I'll post back what I find out tonight.
Thanks!
