I want to change the trans fluid on my '99 Super Duty with a V-10. I'm glad the company saw fit to install a drain plug on the pan. I have 53,000 miles on it and rarely pulled a 35' fifth wheel with it, with no problems. Does anyone suggest changing the filter while changing the fluid, or will changing the fluid do ? I think it calls for 17 quarts. Does anyone know if that's right ? I'm searching for answers. Thanks !
I'd change the filter, its cheap insurance. I just did this recently I also dropped the pan and cleaned of the magnet. It does take that much oil, but unless you drain your torque converter it'll probably only take 7 - 8 quarts.
And while I was at it I also installed the shift valve and spring kit ...
Changing only what's in the pan along with the filter is a waste of time and money. You get 6 or 7 new quarts mixed with 10 or 11 old quarts, and you replaced a filter that didn't need replacing.
Go to the Tech Articles section. I posted an article last July on how to change ALL the transmission fluid. It even has a step on how to change the filter if you want to do that. I change mine every other fluid change.
Yep, I wasn't advocating not changing the entire volume...just providing information on where all that oil is, you don't want to take the oil filter approach and assume that thats it .... that entire volume is there...just not in the pan. Filters are inexpensive...I'll change them fairly frequently
If you don't/didn't have a drain plug ... Did you buy a new pan or have the existing one tapped?
WHAT EVER YOU DO DO NOT USE THE AMSOIL SYNTHETIC IN YOUR TRANNY. I DID AND IT MAY HAVE BEEN WHAT IS CAUSING MY PROBLEM. I CHANGED TO THIS FLUID FOR 2 DAYS FLUSHED OUT, STARTED SHIFTING FUNNY AND MAKING NOISES. FLUSHED AGAIN THIS TIME IT HAD A TON OF METAL IN IT. DONT GAMBLE LIKE I DID?????????? I DONT KNOW WHAT DID THIS FOR SURE BUT I WOULD SURE LOOK AT THE TRANNY FLUID I USED. BY THE WAY I AM A DEALER FOR THIS STUFF.
The valve and springs firm up the shifts, you don't get the slugish shifts (like slipping into the next gear). The springs and valve were in the $30 - 40 range and I did them myself (they come with pretty good instructions).
I've heard exactly what Mark stated in his tech article, so I went with the Mercon.
Yep, you can get them from Dale of Tymar Performance (makes the Tymar intake kits). His website just lists his phone number and email address at this point. Give him a call or email - very nice/helpful.
Sorry to hear about your problems when using Amsoil.
I have had a 97 f150 (185k miles) 99 f150 (155k miles) 01 f150 (67k miles) and now 02 f250 V10 (53K miles) Never had a transmission problem, changed to Amsoil at +/- 20k on each one, and never changed again. I don't think the synthetic fluid was the problem.
yep it wasnt the amsoil . just a weird time for this to happen. im glad it wasnt the fluid because i also run it in everything i own and have never had a problem.
Thanks for all the info, guys. I will change all of the oil in my trans and the filter too. There's alot of useful info on this site and will try to review all subjects that can pertain to my 250 S.D. Thanks again. It's time to start wrenchin'.
