clicking

I have a bad clicking sound in the transfer case of my 98 5.0 awd xp. I have taken it to the dealership several times and they just tell me that it is normal. A friend of mine told me it was probably the chain. Is there any truth in this? Any suggestions? I am not going back to the dealership until I find out what is wrong with it. Any suggestions would be great.
