Will be towing about 5k to Fla. in march from Chicago area. have 2011 F150 SCrew 3.73. max tow package , ecoboost. Wondering to use tow/haul all the time or just using it in the hilly parts of Tenn. Have heard that running in overdrive will mess up the tranny. any thoughts would be appreciated
Running the truck in tow/haul mode the entire trip shouldn't hurt anything. It doesn't lock out any of the gears it does adjust the shift points to hold the transmission in a lower gear longer and keeps the torque converter locked up longer. This allows the truck to stay more in the power range which should actually reduce the amount of shifting and keep the transmission temp down.
I have same truck..Labor Day weekend I towed an 18ft car-hauler trailer with three full-dresser Harleys and a chopper, four guys with luggage, and enough food and adult beverages for four days from TX to TN/NC area. Tow/Haul was on the entire time. Averaged 11.5 - 13 mpg round trip keeping it between 65-70mph.
I agree with keeping it in Tow/Haul. I pulled a 30' Jayco TT 2 weeks ago with my 2010 F-150 Super Crew in Tow/Haul the entire time with no problems or excessive fuel consumption.
