Actually, I think that it is a long overdue feature. It allows for faster loading of the pics, avoids the ridiculously over-sized photos from extending the page beyond the normal margins and yet allows you to see the full sized pic when you want to.

Exactly. Saves everyone from having to load full images. Click the ones you want to see in full.
As for the "oversized" pics causing people to scroll side-to-side, it's called "breaking the frames" and some tech sites ban people that persist in doing it.
