Electricity

Jim and I were kinda talking about this so I figured why not start this for all. Our gas/diesel fees pay in part for our roads. What do electric cars pay? They use roads also. They charge up at night in their garage so its not as if they get taxed at pump. The electric co. benefits sure, but how about the roads? Do they pay a tax, fee, assessment ? I dunno.

Thats a good question Hank, especially in places like Cali where they are becoming more popular..............G

Maybe they pay when the yearly renewal stickers are purchased...

I would think the only way for them to pay would be as Gerry said, however, how would the state know what to charge? Do they send a DMV person out to the car to check the odometer then deduct the mileage from the previous year to find out how many miles where actually put on? And who's to say all those miles were in the state of California? Of course, with the limited range of most electric vehicles that would be a moot point unless you lived near the border. Still, how are they paying their fair share? Again, the number of electric vehicles on the road is not a big amount, but I am sure as long as gas prices keep going up, more and more people will switch.

Jim, thats right, up here when we renew our annual tag (37. per yr) for a car, they ask our milage but they never really check it..........that could be one way eh, charge them by the mile..
For my one ton the tag is 120. per year

Hmm, I don't see my name anywhere in that pic, so I guess I am not one of the ones who makes money. BTW, I am sure the CA DMV is way ahead of us. They probably have an "electrical vehicle surcharge" added to every year's resistration, based on a set mileage conjured up by some geek in a think tank hidden in the basement of the state Capitol building.

Yeah that may be but think about how many times we refuel and pay the fuel tax compared to a one time fee for elect owners. Electric car owners would have a hissy fit if it was high and i`m pretty sure they get some kind of a kick back as it is from purchase. I think its (tax) at .13 per gallon of diesel. I fill up twice a week at 25 gals ea. so figure 6.50 per week times 52=$338 per year not counting dmv fees which cost me 356.00 last year of which most of that was weight fees for the roads. Poop adds up.
So what do they pay for these crappy roads in Cal??

How many vehicles drive the roads of California? Millions. And of that, how many are electric? .001 percent? Sure, they use the same roads, and most likely do it for free. Of course, they can argue, they are not polluting by doing it, and they would be right. However, I can drive the rest of my life in the Bronco, and still not put out as much pollution as the factory did to make one electric vehicle. Of course, that is not the subject of this thread it is their lack of taxes. Don't know how they are being taxed, just making guesses.

When I read this and came to this part "Of course, they can argue, they are not polluting by doing it, " I`m like whoa bro but then I finished the post. Wish an owner of one would chime in. Not bashing at all, just curious
BTW Jim I`m pretty darn sure its a bunch more than that.

Yea, I read that somewhere on FTE. Someone made a comment about someone else driving his 64 Ford pickup most his life and not wanting to get a more fuel efficient "cleaner" vehicle, and his response was he could drive his truck until he dies and still not pollute the air as much as the factory that made just one electric vehicle.
