Changed steering columns, wont start now

95 Ranger. Had to change out steering column because the key broke off in the old one and the ignition switch was toast and screwed up the housing getting it out.
Anyway went to salvage yard and bought another steering column out of a 95 Ranger.
Did not have key so got key made for it at local key shop, then installed column.
Now will not start, just turns over and over does not even try to fire, acts like not getting gas. Cannot hear fuel pump operating at all. I am now thinking the key has to have a chip. Not so according to the two local Ford dealerships. They say these models did not have chip.
We double checked the wireing connections and they look good.
Any ideas guys???
Do the instrument panel warning lights come on when the key is turned to 'run'? If you don't have a blinking light for the PATS, you likely do not have one and the switch it totally mechanical. Check for voltage at the starter relay near the battery. The small terminal should go from 0V to ~12v when you turn the key to 'start'. If not, check the plug in connector on the actual ignition switch itself a ways down the steering column.
