Truck won't start, i installed plugs, wires, cap and rotor.
I have spark.
I suspect fuel pump...I hear the pump when I turn on the ignition but that doesn't mean it's pumping anything.?? I know I can check the fuel pressure at the small valve on the fuel rail. Can I check it with a tire gauge? or not?
If it is my fuel pump how dificult is the job? I'm assuming i'll need to drop the tank. This truck has two tanks.
How much fun am i gonna have and should i skip it and let the $85 an hour pro do it for me?
If you make more than $85/hr, let someone else do it. It's not that difficult - just tedious & time-consuming. It took me ~3hrs for my mother's Grand Marquis, but it's a lot harder to drop that tank and I was trying to take some shortcuts that didn't work. I think the last time I swapped my truck's tank, it only took ~2hrs.
I wouldn't put a tire gauge on that gas line for lots of reasons. A fuel pressure gauge is only ~$25 @ Sears.
In your truck you have two pumps. Three if you have dual tanks. The one in the tank is the LOW PRESSURE pump. That feeds into the HIGH PRESSURE pump mounted on the left inner frame rail. The high pressure pump is the one you hear when you turn your key to the on position before you start your truck. It should run for a couple of seconds and then stop when it reaches its operating pressure. It sounds to me that your high pressure pump is good. Usually pumps either work or they don't. There isn't a in between. Check your fuel pressure. Should be around 45 psi (someone please correct me if I am wrong). Check your fuel filter to make sure it ain't clogged.
If you hear the pump running odds are its pumping. Check your presure. Bad regulator or leaking rail and you wont have enough presure to fire your injectors.
Thanks to all who answered,
The crazy thing is the truck started tonight...but I don't want go anywhere with it because I know it won't start where I shut it off.
Any ideas why it would behave like this??
Could it be fuel filter? Or these regulators you guys were talking about. This problem makes it hard to get to work and even harder to pay for if I can't get to work.
