I bought an 1984 inline six for 200 bucks and I'm having problems the truck will start but it's rough as hell and I know it's a timing problem because I bought it from my brother so. Anyways i move the distributor around and it helps some but not much so I think it's the timing gears so do these have just gears or gears and chains I have no idea
They have just gears, so its highly unlikely its jumped a tooth, unless you have the phoenolic gears, then its possible. First thing I would do, is check for vacuum leaks.
Also a bolt came loose on the distributor and also the cam gear got ate up so we replaced the distributor and were never able to get it timed again
And you won't be able to until you get the cam gear replaced. Your best bet is to change both gears to metal. You might have a little more noise from the front of the engine, but its worth it in the long run.
The gear on the bottom of the distributor got chewed up so we replaced the distributor.......and sorry dick! I used the search function just lookin for some help here
If thats all you did, then what you need to do is remove the distributor, point the #1 piston to TDC (top dead center) of the compression stroke (you'll feel air rushing out if you put your finger over the spark plug hole), reinstall the distributor, with the rotor pointing to the #1 cylinder (approximately 1 o'clock), then time it. You should be real close at the 1 o'clock position. Make sure the SPOUT plug is disconnected when you time it. I believe its a yellow wire that comes off your distributor. I would highly recommend getting a chiltons or haynes manual for your truck, they are highly helpful for jobs like this.

That's the distributor gear. The timing gears are at the front of the motor.
Also, not to be contrary, but you could've also just replaced the distributor gear instead of dropping money on a new distributor. It would also be advantageous of you to inspect WHY the gear on your distributor got chewed up, as well as to look down the hole at the drive gear on the cam and see what kind of condition that's in before doing timing.
I'm not going to apologize if I came across as mean, nor am I going to expect an apology from you for your insult. But, had you used the search function, or even google for that matter, you would've seen that the motor is gear drive, that you could've replaced the distributor gear, and how to set timing on your computer controlled 300.
It's said by many people, and in many religions also, that help comes to those who are willing to help themselves.
