Just want tell how much I enjoy the forums....I just got my first bumpside... I got a 1969 shortbox ranger with a 390 ...three on tree....I've got do a rear main seal before driving it..... I plan on Rat Rodding the truck ... Hope that doesn't make to many people mad...but it my dream....
Welcome to FTE and congrats on your new-to-you rig. It's your truck so do whatever you want but whatever you do, do it with safety and good workmanship in mind. Don't be a hack!!
With that said, I too am going slightly rodentia with it by leaving the rust but patching the rust holes. The engine, drivetrain, and exhaust will be given lots of attention but the body not so much.

Not trying to be a know it all, but at least 90% of everyone (including myself) who thinks they have a rear main seal leaking, don't. It turns out to be the rear of the intake or the valve covers leaking. I would check these first because either one of them is easier to fix than doing the rear main seal. The intake is a PITA, but still easier than the rear seal.
Mine was leaking at both the intake and valve cover, Before someone on here told me to check I would have bet the house and camper it was the rear seal, but it wasn't.
Yep, mine was the passenger side valve cover. Oh, and when ever possible. do yourself a favor and buy the more expensive blue one piece rubber gaskets that have steel reinforcements. Easy to install and no messing with silicone. I put one on my oil pan, trans pan and valve covers and have no issues. They are reusable too.
So do i need to check valve cover and intake with the motor running? I look over it ran my hand around it... came up with grease fingers and one heavy oil on one?
