High Pressure Turbo Question

The other day I noticed some black gunk on the bottom of the intercooler pipe leaving the center of the high pressure turbo. Is this something to be concerned with? Are there any seals there? If it is a problem would it be covered under Ford's warranty (5yr/160,000km). Thanks for any help. Also off topic here but i've been reading alot about fuel in the oil. How can you tell? What color would it be and would you be able to feel the difference?

The high pressure turbo mounts to the low pressure one. So I sounds like the connection maybe an issue.

I am not a warranty expert but turbos/seals are covered in the warranty book so I would say yes.

You can ask your SA and he can look it up by part # and tell you as well.

Fuel in the oil..easist way is the smell of fuel and watching your oil level grow.

Are you referring to the hose that connections the inter-cooler pipe to the turbo?

If so the gunk could be your hose seeping a little oil caused by the CCV(crank case ventilation) on the truck. I should be tight, either its loose or there might be a small tear in the hose. Usually it happen more common on the lower inter-cooler hose between the inter-cooler and the steel pipe.

Ya thats it. It comes up from the bottom of the intercooler to the high pressure turbo. If its torn is that something that should be fixed before I drive it or is it ok to drive until I can get it fixed?

There is no boot there. Its a metal to metal connection. Its on the drivers side and goes into the center of the turbo. I wish i could post a pic to show you.

I think your talking about where the small atmosphere turbo connects to the high pressure turbo. If so theirs a o-ring at that connection.

Ok i'm new to diesels so i'm having trouble explaining it. I can't put up a pic here so I put them on my website at Red Line Coatings - Home under the pictures section. Its the first two pics and its the pipe with the green markings on it. If you guys wouldn't mind checking it out for me that would be great. It has to go in soon because I broke the drain valve for the water separator and it needs a pcm reflash so i'd get this done at the same time if its a problem.

that is called the turbo crossover tube. I think it is on there with an o-ring. Yours appear to be leaking out some oil residue.

How is your oil level? Are you making any oil?

What about blowby. How much do you have. Maybe you are having an excessive amount introduced thru the crankcase ventilation system.

I don't think I'm making any but it is a little high, gonna drain some out tomorrow. No diesel smell though. So the o-ring is shot.

check the crankcase hose off of the fill spout. With the motor running pull the tube off the intake and see what you have.

Ok so I pulled off the hose from the intake with the engine running. Could feel heat but not any air. It's -5 C here so I could see steam coming out of the hose. Without being able to feel the heat I wouldn't be able to tell any air was coming out. Is that good or bad?

you were really looking for smoke, oil vapors. Have someone bump up the rpms a bit and see how much you are getting.

Also inspect the intake tube. How much oil residue do you have?

How much is normal and how much is too much? Truck has 136,000km which is around 85,000 miles.

I really can't answer that question. I would think if there is quite a bit of residue and smoking though that would be the causing of what you are seeing at the turbo.

Knowing that then maybe you can do a CCV mod and vent it into a canister that you drain off periodically.

I think that is the purpose of this drill, to find out where all the oil residue is coming from.

Only other cause I can think of would be EGR but that would throw a code and likely cause a bunch of driveability concerns.
