2011 f150 Ecoboost
New here, faithful f150 owner. Recently bought my first new f150, a 2011 supercab xlt 4x4 ecoboost. So far I've managed to put on 5600miles. I love the truck, but have noticed a few things. I was wondering if anyone else has been having similar issues.
1. granted its a 4x4, but I have yet to see hwy mpg above 17.5 in 2 hi.
2. I can hear one of the turbos spooling up and stalling. Sometimes it'll happen at idle when stoped...Is this a common occurrence?

Best I ever did was 17 highway with the EB I owned....but my truck had lots of other "issues" too.
My EB truck was so wacky that at 7,200 miles I traded it in on a 5.0 and have been very happy ever since. I took a trip last week in the new 5.0 truck (4 hours each way, through the Rocky Mtns) and got 20.3 average (70 mph for the most part). This truck just turned 2,000 miles on the odometer.

Best I ever did with my EB was 18.1 on a trip...all highway and driving like a panzy. My FX4 has a 3.73 rear though, so I expected lower MPG overall. (I can however beat most cars 0-60, which is really funny).
Are you sure the turbo is "stalling"? What you may be hearing is the turbo spooling down from decreased exhaust pressure. You also shouldn't hear the turbo at idle, unless maybe it's idling a bit high during warmup. I believe these turbos spool at different points to eliminate turbo lag and extend the power band. If your turbo was truly "stalling" you would get boost flutter and a noticeable sudden loss of power.

Yea the ecoboost mpg is kinda all over the map. It's really hard to pinpoint the issues but I think the motor is just very responsive, so that being said, terrain has a big effect as does the person driving it.
I did a 630 mile round trip yesterday, on the way out on the high way i was avg 17mpg at about 65-70 which is really good for me. After that it seemed to drop off a bit for no apparent reason (although perhaps there was a slight increase in the terrain). Overall I averaged 16.5mpg during yesterdays trip and I was not babying it by any means.
5.0 mpg seems to be much more stable from what I've read.

Definitely the turbos. I've noticed hills kill this thing's MPG. I've had turbo cars in all styles over the last 15 years or so, but the twin scrolls on this are really sensitive to terrain changes. But, it puts down a lot of power, so that's the trade-off.
I too average between 16-17mpg on the highway with my "normal" driving style...which still isn't bad for a large truck overall.

15-18 avg city less if I'm in DC stop and go but 20 hwy unless alot of hills 50mph seems to be best for mpg i tend to stick to 65 around here 75 if I get out of the area to an open highway then i get about 19 hwy
my friend get 18 mixed consistently 20 or better hwy
we both noticed higher octane fuel gets better mileage and i feel like i notice the performance get better also it is a really touchy motor (last trucks were a 460 gas and 7.3 diesel) I leave on the avg mpg scene and I get much better mileage watching it and just using enough pedal to maintain my speed which is always less pedal than i would use when im not watcching the little fuel use bar graph gauge

I was wondering if higher octane fuel would yield better mpg, but there's a catch to that. The fuel costs more (obviously), so does it generate enough MPG more to warrant the increased cost per gallon? That's a 'Catch-22' moment right there. You're filling up 20+ gallons at $.40 more per gallon...that adds up over the 87 octane with slightly lower average mpg.

I have an fx2 ecoboost. Love the truck. Gets about 17mpg on the highway. Not what the sticker says of course, but I can live with that since it has so much power. I also have an 08 expo with a 5.4. It gets about 16 on the highway and nowhere near the power. Only way to get sticker mpg is to slow it down to 55mph, and nobody's going to do that.
