just swapped the motor mounts (front L and R) in my 74 F100(390). here's the problem: new mounts on, let engine down(tranny still hooked up) and the studs on the new mounts hit the holes on the crossmember, just not fully...half of the stud over the hole..the other half outside the hole...any suggestions? lacks like 1/4 inch forward movement to seat in holes.
The mounts on my 69 F100 were labeled "top" but they could still be mixed up with each other. They are offset a little to the front but if switched, they would be towards the back and not line up. Just my $.02.
Your mounts are either on the wrong sides, are upside down, or are the wrong mounts.
Try swapping one top/bottom, if that looks like it works swap the other. If thats not it, try swapping the sides, and if all else fails, take them back!
I just bought new mounts a couple weeks ago, and the first "right" box had a "left" marked mount. The second box had one that wasn't even close to an FE mount, and the third was just right. Sometimes thats what ya gotta do, unfortunately...
okay, here's an update...swapped the mounts and even tried flipping them...they are labeled L and R.....took them back and me and the sales rep opened up 8 boxes of L and R sets...all the exact same...and correct mounts for the motor and body....several friends i have are telling me to grab a pry bar and give the motor a little "encouragement"..hmmmm
What if the TRANS mount had some excess movement in it? Couldn't the engine/trans combo have moved a little? I would get out the pry and check the trans mount.
I changed over to an automatic from a stick and had to relocate the trans crossmember back2 inches. I just drilled new holes in the frame. Maybe you could unbolt the tranny crossmember from the frame, get the motor mounts in place and snugged in, then look at the tranny mount bolt holes and drill out if necessary. Good Luck!!!
OOPs. Same thing happened to me today. Left side goes in fine. But the right seemed a little high. I had the tranny unbolted from its cross member. But no luck. Went back to the auto parts house and looked at all of their boxes. And they all look alike. Decided to go to another parts house. And low and behold. They had a different brand. And the left mount was different from what I had. Rushed back and installed both new mounts. BINGO. The engine dropped right in.
