I'm not totally sure on what to look for (considering my 87 was a big PITA), so I was wondering what would be some helpful tips before I yell at the guy to take my money haha.
I was thinking the same thing. I was looking at it for a decent winter beater. Body's damn near shot, saw it driving around town today so I guess it's trustworthy. But $1500 seems a bit high (well, that's what I thought).
Yeah, I paid $1600 for mine (granted it was a great deal) and it's my DD. Got about $2700 into it now and it's gettin' better every day. I scored a ton of small ticket items from a bud scrapping his '95 Bronco (A/C pump, driver/ pass windows & motors, alum wheels & a bunch of other stuff). It was a good runner when I bought it but just tightening up things. $400 for the near new Mickeys (32x11.5x15) with mount/ balance. Got a new ignition control module for it ($75). Just bought all new steering linkage & ordered new MOOG CC844 springs for the front to level it out (about $215 for all of it). Put new Monroe gas magnum shocks on last weekend as well as oil change (about $300). Upgraded to the E series saginaw p/s pump & bracket for $75. I'd still like to freshen up the brakes once I get the springs on in a couple weeks as well as an alignment. I know you're not unfamiliar with all this stuff but just showing you that things add up. Granted mine's a DD/ kid hauler and I want a decent ride, also sounds like this one won't need the majority of that stuff mine did.
If you just need a winter beater offer him whatever that mythical vehicle would be worth to you ($900, $1000, $1200?). Never know, he might take it & you'd both be happy.
I'd say, if you can afford it, spend another 1k and get something that isn't rusting as bad as that. If you go for it make sure to check the leaf spring hangers, they are usually rusted like crazy on a truck that looks like that and that could be a Big problem if they are real bad. also usually the radiator mounts are shot and the rear body crossmembers. If you just want it for one or 2 winters exclusively then well, thats up to you if it is worth it.
IMO that trucks a bit pricey considering the shape its in. It is very possible to find a obs truck thats nearly rust free (and thats coming from me in the northeast, not the south). PLus, its a very common truck, only a 302, so its not like its got a drivetrain worth spending extra money on.
The guy hasn't returned my call yet, and I really only planned on offering him $900. If he doesn't accept, I'll just tell him to let me know when he'll consider it.
