Hey
I have an 89 f150 4x4 with a 302 in it. the motor in it has about 80 on it from a cougar and its developed an oil pressure problem. it is out of the normal range but not below the left hash. the last engine i had in it had this issue at times at stop lights after it was warm and it dipped so low the engine light would come on. what causes the pressure to drop like that? sometimes its up in the normal range but not often in the last two weeks since the oil was changed. thanks
I'm not sure your gauge is real, but even if it is, the sender can do that if the diaphragm springs a leak. When the engine is running, oil leaks to the backside of the diaphragm and builds up slowly. When it gets full, the pressure on the backside is the same as on the engine side, so the sender detects low or no pressure. When the engine is off, the oil leaks out of the back of the sender, allowing it to show the true pressure the next time you crank, but not for long.
Try checking it with a cheap mechanical pressure gauge to be sure.
Your truck has a oil presure switch not a analog sender unit unless someone has done the mod already. Do a search here on oil pressure gauge if your intrested, its cheap and easy to do. The switch you probably have right now makes contact somewhere around 7 psi. Have a look it's beside the oil filter. The switch type sender is about 1 1/4" round while the variable sender unit is about 2" round.
I had similar symptoms on my 89 E-150 302 around 100k. Turned out the relief valve in the oil pump was sticking. New pump fixed it. However, the stock gauge on this thing has always wandered even after replacing the sending unit. I have a mechanical gauge on it with a tee fitting so both gauges work.
Actually, the fuel, temp, and oil pressure gauges all wander in unison. They all go high or low at the same time. If anybody has a fix, I'd like to hear it!
