Hi, I have a 1997 Club XLT Van 5.4L that the dome light stays on after I close the door. I can hear the relay click after the proper timeout but the light stays on. Any suggestions? If it's the relay, where and how do I get to it?
I had this same problem with my 98 F150.
Found the solution right here on this forum.
Anyway, the door switch is in the door, not the jam or hinge.
And in my case, although the door would latch, the switch wouldn’t close (or is that open?).
You should find it on the outside edge of the door (when the door is open). You know, opposite ends from the hinge. The switch it seems is inside the latching mechanism.
Postings I saw on this-here forum said to remove and lub, or replace.
Me, i just took a can of spray lub, and lightly, quite lightly, sprayed a bit inside the mechanism - opened and closed the door 5 / 6 times to work it in, and bingo. It hasn’t done it in over a year and a half.
By the way, i went ahead and did both doors - though it was caused by the driver’s side door.
I'm assuming the door jamb switches are the same as in older vehicles and they just unscrew to remove.
The shop manual doesnt show a relay for the dome lights.
Hi, I got the switch out by getting behind the plastic mounting piece and it justs pops out. The switch has three wires but I did not have time to take a meter to it. Does anybody know how this is wired (I have no wiring diagram)? I guess I can compare it electrically to the one in the other door.
LG/Y is power in, Rd/Pk goes to the warning chime, Bk/LB goes to the lights.
You might also want to try unplugging the main light switch in case there is a problem with it.
I just remembered that my wife and daughter sometimes drive the van. What I found was that one of them had turned the main switch all the way counter-clockwise and killed the battery. Sorry
