Strealing 10.25

I'm looking to get a 10.25 for my project one-ton 79 250, and I need to be sure of the year window for the second generation model, I believe it is 93-97, please correct me if I am mislead. Thanks

James

Sorry for misspelled title.

Yeah, any of those years should work just fine. Or you could get one out of a 99+ Super Duty, they have disc brakes in the rear.

What are the differences in the newer ones, compared to the 2od gen besides brakes?
Plus are there any differences between 250 and 350 models?

Bolt pattern on the SD rears are metric. Older models are standard.

Duh....forgot about that. Probably don't want different front and rear bolt patterns.

you will need a sterling 10.25 from a single rear wheel truck due to the dual rear wheel trucks having a narrow frame in the rear so the spring perches wont line up. the springs are also narrower in the drw

Check the frame width on the 79, I want to say it's 34" which would mean you want a cab n chassis, the OBS trucks that you're looking at for donors were 37" pickup (SRW and DRW) but the cab n chassis OBS trucks had a 34" frame (industry standard).

If you can move the spring perches on the axle, you can find a Dana 60 or 70 from any year van, from even a 2010, you'll have disk brakes, and the vans still use our old standard bolt patern!

But the frames aren't spaced the same as trucks.

thats true for your truck, because she is a cab and chassis.
the SRW and DRW pickups use the same frame and 3" wide springs, but just use a wider axle out back.
this is why when one wants to make a 4wd dually pickup (that ford never built.only 4wd dually option was for the c&c's.) it's easy as pie to start with 4wd srw axle truck and turn it into a DRW in just an afternoon.a full day project i suppose if you need a bed too.

'79,
your correct about the years for the 2nd generation sterling.

Thanks for all the replies. At my local pull-a-part, there are six or so candidates, all within the stated year models, for only one hundread bucks. Which would be the best choice, I'm guessing there are no variances, I will probably get the best looking one. What should I look for, possible “bad eggs” plus, what’s the easiest way to determine gear ratio, is there a tag, or do I have to count teeth? Thanks
James

Tag on axle.
OBS trucks usually only had 355 and 410 so tag will read (near bolt) 3 55 or 3L55
L is a limited slip.
Cab chassis trucks sometimes didn't have 10.25s. And had 373s and 410s I think.

What does OBS stand for? Original Body Style?

its one of the misused terms many use when describing the 9th generation f-series trucks (1992-1996/and 97 f250/350.)
it stands for Old Body Style.however the term was originally only for two specific trucks.the 1997 F250 and the 1997 f350.
the reason they called them "old body style" in 1998,was because the "newer body style" also came out the same year.
the term "OBS" is literally "so 1999" so to speak lol as ford calls all super duty 1999+ rendering the OBS term obsolete and then some, even when correctly used for the 1997 model year.
