Hey guys been wanting to trade up and get a newer truck and been looking at the 6.7 for some time now. Currently i have a 96 f350 psd, well the one in my sig. And have heard all bad about the 6.0 little bad about the 6.4 but the 6.7 sounds to be flawless.
What do you guys think about the 6.7 good, bad. I will be using it as a farm truck and run a excavating business.
I don't remember what the hp/tq specs were in 96, but they were MUCH lower than tue 400/800 you get with the 6.7. Night and day difference. I tow a 9k travel trailer and the truck does it with authority. I haven't had any issues thus far. A couple people have had some issues but they are not wide spread. I love my truck and won't give it up for the world.
I've had the 7.3, 6.0, 6.4 and 6.7. In my opinion the new engine is WAY better than the 6.0 and 6.4. I only have good things to say about the 7.3 but the 6.7 is simply awesome.
I also have had a 7.3,6.0 and this is the best strongest and best riding truck I have owned. I have 36000 miles and love it like I just drove it off the lot. Everything is still tight and solid.

I think its way too finicky! They always look better when you want one than when you have one. Just like they say about a boat. The two best days are the day you buy it and the day you sell it!

So you're saying we should buy a boat as well.....?
It is true the 6.7 is...sensitive. A good ole 7.3 you could pour just about anything in the tank and it would burn it. But unfortunately those days are gone. The American Three are building what the government is forcing upon us. They have to build modern engines that burn cleaner and get better mileage. We are lucky that they can produce this kind of power with their hands tied. Last summer a buddy had a failure with his '97 and I went to tow his fiver home for him with my '05 with the 6.0. I let him drive. You couldn't smack the smile off his face as he towed his own fiver with my truck. Now the 6.7 is way more powerful than that. And so quiet. and so smoooooth. It is very complicated, and it can be kinda scary. But I got the big honkin' warranty, I will maintain her to the letter as I do all my babies, and drive it like the three ton rocket it is!

Having a boat is like having a dependant. Dockspace, maintainance, fuel(20 gal hour) and good times. A lot like these trucks, but over all way to big of a pain in the azz. Unfortunatly we need new trucks, and they all have similar tech. This heres the last cowboy song. The end of a hundred year waltz. They cost way to much foor what they are and long term maintanance will be a nightmare. There will be no choice but to trade often, just as the company wants.

Long term maintenance?
Like any other truck? At least the engine will go at least 200,000 miles plus. This is my last truck.

If you want to trade up because it's "that time" go ahead, make yourself happy.
You just have to ask yourself the following question:
"Can my business depend on the new 6.7 for 99% or more up time?"
In my personal view, the answer to that question is a resounding NO, it's not a proven system yet. I would wait another year. My rule is 3 years for a system to be fully tested in the real world.
There have been a fair amount of threads around here regarding HPFP failures, transmission crap, people actually trading in 6.7s because of too much time in the shop.
In my opinion, if I had a business that depended on my truck running 99%+ of the time, I would not buy a 6.7 L right now. I'd get a 6.2 gasser.

We live in 2012 now and times has changed. I think 36 months is (too) long time to evaluate any product. The question is can your business stay competitive waiting 36 months, now days for of the business the game is over in 180 days. The fact is no leading edge product in this world will be perfect, take the space shuttle for example it constantly needs fine tune or update. In my book the 6.7 is field tested and its proven.
I went from a 2001 7.3 to the 2011 6.7. I have never been sorry. My 2001 is still in the family and I can say no wrong about the 7.3. They were almost flawless, just a few minor issues (cam position sensors etc). The 6.7 is yet to be proved long term but there are quite a few with up to 100,000 and plus miles on them now. Sure there have been some problems but they are in the minority. Most 6.7 owners are very happy with the truck and engine. As others have said all of the new trucks are much more complex and higher in maintenance. The 2011 F250 diesel is like driving a Lincoln compared to the older 7.3's. The power, fuel mileage and comfort are exceptional. In the end it is a decision you will have to make by yourself. You cannot keep driving a 97 7.3 forever and I personally think the 6.7 will prove to be as reliable as any of the diesels. Good luck with your decision.

Sir,
I couldn't agree with you more. My 6.7 has been flawless but with only 9000 miles on it since July. I do not rely on my truck for business. There are a variety of things that have influenced component failures. From what I can decipher reading posts I believe that the failures are minimal in comparison to the total amount of trucks out there. Take into account that many of us on this forum are enthusiastic about modifications and/or DYI error which (I think) contributes to issues. Ask yourself "what are my needs" and make the best informed decision. Looking back I probably would have been just as happy with a 6.2. I'm now spoiled with all the torque on demand that the 6.7 has an abundance of!
PS: I highly recommend the snow plow prep package. For $80 you get heavy springs that level the truck and ride very well.
What kind of MPG's city/highway do you guys get unloaded and everything being stock and not driving like a bat out of hell? In my 7.3 I get 16/19. Just wondering what the 6.7 gets.
