Could be just that, pinging. You didn't mention what the vehicle is though. I had a ford Ranger with a 2.3 litre that would ping on the flat. It would only run well on premium which I felt it didn't really need being an economy motor and all. I cured it by removing the octane plug in the ignition system. Apparantly these trucks are made to run in countries that have less than decent fuel. kinda like our regular gas, anyway, removal of this plug did nothing to the performance but it never did ping on regular again. Unfortunatly I don't think the bigger trucks have this feature so you may have to check out your ignition system, timing, plugs,knock sensor etc.

To heck with checking it,just put either a restrictor or blocking plate between the EGR and the manifold. These nasty gasses can really screw up the way an engine performs. I used stainless steel shim stock on my 5.0. Big difference!
