I'm almost sure that the 31 spline Trac-Lok I got will go in my truck. I need to know if I swap it in do I need to re-shim the pinion, check the backlash, etc. I'm just swapping carriers, not gears. Will the carrier have an effect on this?
If all you're doing is changing carriers, leave the pinion alone. There's no reason to touch it. Before you tear down the old carrier, get a backlash reading off the gearset as it is now. If it is in spec, and it should be since it's the factory setup, then you're going to want to match that backlash as nearly as possible. It's probably a good idea to check the contact area with white grease when you're done, but since you're not changing the front-to-rear setup it should be OK if you get the backlash right.
Since you have a 93-96 truck, your vehicle speed sensor and anti-lock brakes work off an exciter ring mounted on the carrier next to the ring. Ford says not to reuse the exciter ring when you change carriers. Some people have with no ill results reported. It costs about $35 at the Ford dealer.
