The front hubs on my '71 are a little noisy when going down the road at highway speeds with them locked in. Now, 90% of the time I just lock them when I need them and unlock them after that. The other 10% of the time is winter when I might be in/out of 4 wheel drive several times in one day. What do you do?
jseim44,I only lock them in when I need them then unlock right away as soon as I can. We've had little snow or rain this year so far so I have only locked them up a couple of times out in the back 40. My front end is really quiet when locked in,you may have some wear or adjustment issues.
When I had manual locking hubs I did just as nod does.
When growing up and first driving it was drilled into me to never go above 40mph in 4x4 and never over 50mph with hubs locked. Also to lock and unlock the hubs as needed with 4x4.
I do not know how much truth was in all that but I never had to replace hubs. Sold my parents hand me down with 180K and I believe original hubs on it. Put 50K plus on a F250 (bought with about 160K on it) without any hub problems. There was a motor problem but that's a different story. And a Toyota I bought at about 150K and brought to 205K before rust got the best of the frame.
OK, thanks guys. I'm deciding if I'm going to keep it or sell it. If I keep it there are a few things that need addressed, I think the front axle being one of them.
