I have a 78 bronco with no stereo PO claims it was stolen so the wires were chopped. I went to CarToys to see how much it would cost to instal one and they said they would have to hardwire it. Well i was doing some dash work tonight and as i was fixing some wires i noticed a few that were cut but looked like they would belong to the radio. One was big and purple with a black stripe and the other was black. I put my test light on the purple and got nothing till i turned the key to ACC or run, i determined this to be the ignition one. But i didn't see anything for a constant 12v wire, I was wondering if the 78s had one or if i need one for an aftermarket radio? If needed could i just run a wire from the POS on the battery to an inline fuse and then to the deck? Thanks.
You definitely need one. The battery/constant wire is where head units draw their power from and what retains the clock/presets/ect. If the wiring has been cut, don't risk it, just run a fresh fused wire run from the battery to your new head unit.
also i believe your fuse box, on my 78 truck has a spot where you can hook up a female spade terminal, run the wire from that and that should be your constant.
Oh sorry i forgot about this thread, i already got it finished:
I tapped into the cigarette constant so i am able to use both the socket and my radio. One of the technicians at my work told me that would probably be the easiest and safest way seeing as it is already fused and doesn't have a lot of voltage.
