Would compression cause excessive white/grey smoke at start up until operating temp? I was thinking injector orings but swamps diesel told me compression.... Not injector orings.... My fuel filter has less than 500 miles and is dark grey so that is why I thought injector orings.
Gray/black fuel filter sounds like injector o-rings to me. I don't know for sure if that would explain the smoking until warm up or not though, that might be something as simple as a few bad glow plugs. You had better believe I would be doing anything I could do to avoid pulling it out for an overhaul though. And the injector o-rings are cheaper than the compression tester, so you do the math...
Swamps knows their stuff, but I'm not sure I see where they are going with this one.
I have gotten the orings and was going to have the injectors tested while out that was the purpose in calling swamps. I just had 4 injectors and 4 glow plugs replaced by ford... He done a compression test and said #8 was a little low but didn't give me any #s. It smokes at start then clears but starts again at idle... The smell is like raw diesel but the smell isn't as bad since the injector install. It runs clean not rough so I wouldn't think bad compression.... I found a place to flush and flow test my injectors but its $50 each.... What's you guys thoughts?
I would send Jim at Rosewood an email about your injectors, that seems quite high. I don't however know how soon you need your truck as you'd have to send them in to him. Sure wish you would have asked about your injectors sooner before ford more than likely bent you over for the 4 you had installed.

Completely understandable, I should have worded that differently then, wish you would have known about the site! Good luck, send jim an email. He's generally pretty fast on turnaround time too, fyi.

Me too... It would have saved me several hundred dollars.

Maybe borrow a tester if you're near enough to someone. I hated to do it but I bought a Harbor Freight kit (China). I could have made up one for $50. or so with a fluid filled gauge and the set was on sale so, I can test a lot of stuff!
