Surging crew cab issue

Hey guys,

Well this same issue has happened in the past. I'd be driving along and my truck would cut out and although not die, it would have drastically reduced power. I could hear the fuel coming and going in rpm change. So essentially the same pedal pressure to make it to 60 at one point in time would make the truck so 70 or faster when I heard more fuel going to it. It never really felt like it was gonna die all the way, didn't go below 50 or so and I kept the fuel to it. It did it on a long road trip before for about 30 seconds and then was fine all the way home. It did it another time but really severe and I thought it was going to die and then it was perfectly fine. It happened again tonight and I could really feel it cutting out or losing power and then it would be no problem. I was even coming back into my town and got stopped and got a bad talking to by the deputy, but no ticket. Its weird I never ever speed, but the one time I am worried about my truck breaking down and hurrying home and I get talked to.

Oil is nearly due for its 5k change, here in about 300 miles. The first instance of this happening was at about 2k or so miles on the oil. It also had a new fuel filter and I did clean the FPR. I diesel up at one place only, and on many occasions it will run perfectly fine. It has ran good more times then it has ran bad I will say. I run Diesel Kleen, and also tcw3.

I did a cylinder contribution test with my AE here about a week ago and found no issues. I've got no leak in the valley. I do have a CEL but that is from a glow plug issue being burnt into memory.

So where should I start? My truck is reliable enough to make me think its ok for a long trip, but just enough mystery that I really do not want to risk breaking down.

2x on trying the CPS. It's a quick cheap ($30) fix if that is all it is.

Well it has been replaced. 02/23/10 at 228,791 miles it was replaced with a ford part. The cam sensor and speed control recall were both corrected, at Susanville Ford in CA. Can they go bad that quick?

I pulled the fuel filter today and looked in the bowl. The fuel bowl didn't appear to be gunked up. I ran AE tests for AP, and HPOP both looked ok. I also cleaned FPR from inside of bowl, I didn't get anything bad off that.

Here is a pic of my fuel filter at 4.7k miles.

Could something like this be caused by the throttle position sensor?

Yeah it can, but typically it will do it all the time if it is the TPS or the IVS. It wouldn't hurt to clean them up with a little electrical contact cleaner though. That's a good call Joseph.

I attempted to run the TPS test, but I get no change when I look up tps on the AE scanner. It says a number that doesn't change based upon pedal position. However, when I look at the accelerator position setting it changes just like it is supposed to and is within parameters.

Any idea as to where I can find the TPS? I know the one of the pedal is the APS but unsure of where the tps is.

The TPS is on the pedal. What are you calling the APS?

I thought that was the APS and the TPS was on the motor lol. I thought a read a ford book that said it had both. Good to know though. I guess the TPS is listed as APS on AE scan tool./

You can test it with a mutimeter. Ground battery and hot to the middle wire on the plug at the TPS the slowly puts the pedal and watch for dead spots

Yeah I tested it with auto enginuity and it doesn't appear to have any dead spots, it goes smoothly. I guess it wouldn't hurt to replace it along with the CPS, just because.
