EGR Disconnect

2006 F-250 6.0l - I may not have read enough other posts on this forum previous to writing this but, if I could get some help or info it would be great.
I was blowing out huge ammounts of white smoke constantly, my MPG went from 15-16 MPG to 12-13 MPG, turbo lag was alot longer than I remember in the past. I constanly checked oil and antifreeze and all my levels stayed the same as if I was not burning either.
I cleaned the EGR Valve and put in new gasket and orings based on Fords recomendation for cleaning, the problem only got worse. I unplugged the EGR valve: no white smoke, turbo spools fast, MPG increased by 1-2 MPG. I did throw a CEL light after the second start up though but have not noticed a limp mode kick in.
Bad EGR valve? What was I burning? etc.?

White smoke is typically coolant or maybe the effect of cold outside temps. Could be a bad EGR valve... the CEL will light when the EGR is unplugged with an 06. How many miles have you gone since unplugging the EGR and keeping an eye on the oil & coolant? If you have an EGR cooler going bad, you may only be going through 8-10 ounces of coolant per 1,000 miles which hardly shows in the degas reservoir.

I'm not a tech but unplugging the EGR doesn't fix anything although might buy you some time before dealing with replacing the EGR valve or the (all too) common replacement of the oil and EGR coolers in addition to doing the full clean-up of the intake manifold. Good luck

Does the smoke smell like fuel or coolant? Diesel will make white smoke.

Its got almost 10,000 miles on it since I unplugged the EGR and still no coolant or oil level changes (besides the oil change that was done).

The smoke has a sweet smell so I am assuming coolant.

Park your truck nose down and pull the EGR valve. If you see coolant in the intake you have an EGR cooler leak. It may be so slight that you don't notice much coolant loss but it can make a lot of smoke.

Get your truck code scanned and please post your codes. It could help us with any other problem that might be hiding.

A couple easy tests that may help figure out whats going on, or not - park it with the engine downhill after running it to operating temp. Remove the EGR valve the next morning and see if its wet inside the manifold. Don't be afraid to stick yur finger down in there and root around, it will wear off in a few weeks. In addition beg, borrow or steal a gauge and see what yur EOT/ECT delta is. Check delta with engine well warmed up (ECT around 190 degrees) running down a level part of the highway for a few miles. Post back the info and we can go from there.
