Engine noisy at start up???

My 95 F250 straight 6 seems to not have any oil presure at start up if it sits overnight. The bottom end makes noise until it pumps up and as it quiets down i can watch the oil pressure guage come up. This process takes about 2-3 seconds. I have replaced the oil pump and pickup tube recently with no luck. This problem seemed to come out of the blue, its not like it started to get a little noisy each day for a while. I am running straight 30 weight oil... Any ideas or suggestions would be great. Thanks

Change your oil filter. There should be an anti-drainback valve in the filter to prevent the oil from all draining back into the pan after it shuts down. If your valve has malfunctioned, the maker put in a substandard valve or the maker omitted it entirely, the oil is draining back into the sump instead of holding prime like it's supposed to (assuming nothing else is wrong.)

Some makers like FRAM (and the various people they repackage for) omit ADBV's entirely, either consistently or from run to run. Even when they do put an ADBV in, sometimes it wears out sooner than it should or it just stops working. Did you recently change your oil filter, or has it been a long time? If the former, change brands and look for a filter with an ADBV.

See this for more info: http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/index.html

I was running synthetic oil but switched to straight 30wt. The problem showed up after an oil change. So the filter problem makes sense... what filter should i use???A ford filter?

I was running 30wt because I thought I had a lot of engine wear and wanted to run thicker oil. So is the general thought on here that my filter is not holding prime...it makes sense because it spins on sideways.

I'm no oil expert but the way I understand it straight 30w is very thick when cold where multi visc oils stay closer to the same thickness at different temps. That could be part of the noise at startup you are hearing. I think I'd change the filter to a motorcraft and get some 10w30 or other multi viscosity oil.

Yeah, I wouldn't be using a straight 30 weight. 20W50 is about as far as I'd go. 10W30 or 15W40 would be what I'd look into.

Also, 104K isn't "a lot" of engine wear yet. Stay with the original weight recommendations in the manual (lean to the heavier side) until you have reason to change to something outside the recommendations. And yes, swap for a Ford Motorcraft filter (cheap at Walmart and IIRC made by Purolator to Ford specs), a Purolator filter, a Champion Labs-made one (most commonly relabeled as STP at Autozone, look at the box to make sure it says "Champion Labs" on it) or a NAPA/Wix filter. Those are safe and consistent quality filters.

Others have steered you right. Get a better oil. I'm a +1 for Rotella. Have 55gal drums of it delivered to my house. Filter that's cheap will certainly cause loud started- head has no oil.

Does your engine smoke any at startup? But since you said it started with the oil change, go back to where it wash happy.

Ford states:

"It is normal for the oil to leak down from the hydraulic tappets during extended shutdown periods (Overnight). As a result, these tappets may clatter for a few seconds after the engine starts until oil pressure builds up. This momentary start-up noise is normal and not detrimental to engine operation."

my motor rattles for just a split second when i start it in the morning. i never worried about it because the 300 is such an overbuilt motor. but i guess according to ford, a little noise is okay.

Just spun a new motorcraft filter on it and I am hoping when I start it tomorrow it is quiet. One thing I did notice was I did not get much oil that leaked out when I took the FRAM filter off, no where near what the filter would hold if I filled it up. How much should leak out when I take the filter off keeping in mind it spins on sideways.
